The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Dr. Angela Uwakwem, has identified poor working conditions as the major challenge facing the hospital.
Uwakwem said the institution could not boast of good vehicles, adding that the institution’s four ambulances always broke down.
The medical director spoke during the commissioning of some projects embarked on by her administration.
She stated that the institution had increased the range of medical services which included paediatric surgeries, hip and knee replacement and spinal surgeries, neurosurgical cases and intensive services with six ventilators.
Uwakwem appealed to the Federal Government to make the hospital’s budgetary allocations commensurate with the staff strength and scope of service delivery. She added that the institution adopted four health centres in the state for partnership, noting that this would improve the quality of health care in rural areas.
She said, “One of the issues we are battling with is that of salaries withheld in December 2015; October, November, December 2016; and that of January 2017. These salaries were withheld for ‘no work no pay’ policy.
“I, therefore, appeal on behalf of the hospital management that the government temper justice with mercy and make these payments to be effected. Particularly painful is the withheld December 2015 salaries of doctors who did not declare any strike at this time.”
