The Nigerian Infection Control Association (NICA) has asked government to mandate establishment of infection prevention and control programmes in all government hospitals to enhance prevention of infections, a provision in the National Health Act.
NICA, on Monday at its national conference in Abuja, also called for its inclusion in the curriculum for undergraduate medical and allied health students.
In a communiqué, it noted professionals already working in infection prevention and control were inadequate, lacked a certification system, and research into it was too poorly funded to develop local processes and procedures. The association lamented the absence of a strong surveillance system for antimicrobial resistance and the absence of national guidelines to control use of antibiotics across the country.
NICA chair FT Ogunsola said high rates of antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria was "undermining all the good efforts of governments at all levels to provide quality and safe healthcare for our citizens."
The conference comes amidst concern over the recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease and recurring spikes of Lassa fever.
