The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has called on government to put in place a policy that would regulate the testing, prescription and use of antibiotics.
Chairman of the association, Ndubuisi Ebitea made the call during the road walk and news briefing held by the organization to mark this year’s World Biomedical Laboratory Science Day in Abuja.
He said research had shown that antibiotic resistance was increasing at a faster rate than it could be controlled, adding that it could eventually affect an entire community. According to him, the resistance of organisms was now a huge concern because resistant organisms were becoming prevalent, and bacterial resistance often resulted in treatment failure, increased cost and mortality.
“The problem is no more restricted to the hospital setting, resistance will continue to worsen if not addressed and there are no antibiotics on the immediate horizon with activity against multi-drug resistant pathogens. The monetary cost of treating antibiotic resistant infections worldwide is estimated to be billions of dollars every year,” he said.
He advised members of the public to help antibiotics do their job of eradicating organisms by taking them as directed and finishing the full prescription even if they were already feeling better.
