Government at various levels have been urged to de-emphasise the urban approach in sensitising the people on HIV/AIDS in order to build on the reduced cases in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Prevention Manager of Health Initiative for Safety and Stability in Africa (HIFASS), Dr. Pat Matemilola, spoke during a HIV/AIDS sensitisation and screening exercise at Kado Kuchi, Abuja.
He said the stiff campaign against the disease had been sustained and attributed it to the successes recorded in the fight against the spread of the disease.
“The prevalence of HIV in Nigeria is already falling but most of the effort is in the urban areas and not in the rural areas,” he said adding that the group was in the community to bridge the gap.
He observed that awareness was still lacking in the community stressing that some of the residents did not know necessary things to do against contracting the viral infection.
“We have talked to them and we hope they will be a bit knowledgeable. This effort should continue. We must never be tired of sensitising them regularly so that the level of awareness will increase,” he said.
A resident, Lucky Peter, commended the group for the programme. He said through the programme he was able to understand how the virus was spread and what to do to be safe.
Several residents, including women and children, participated in the campaign organised to mark the World’s AIDS Day.
