The President of Sickle Cell Society, Ireland, and Sickle Cell Awareness Initiative NigeriaIreland, Mrs. Esther Pepple Onolememen has said that over 40 million Nigerians were currently affected by Sickle Cell Anaemia.
She said that going by the statistical projection, more than half of Nigeria’s population maybe affected in the next 10 years.
Speaking at an awareness campaign on sickle cell in Kaduna State, Pepple stressed that the disease may become an epidemic if urgent action was not taken by government and relevant stakeholders.

According to her, over 25 percent of adults in Nigeria have the traits of sickle cell, while infant mortality rate is about eight percent and annual growth rate at 3.2 percent. She also noted that about 300,000 live births are being added annually to already existing figure.
The Founder and Coordinator of a Kaduna-based non-governmental organization, Sickle Cell Patients’ Health Promotion Centre (SCPHPC), Hajiya Badiya Inuwa stated that the antidote to sickle cell is awareness.
She appealed to government at all levels to invest in awareness creation and research that will help the public understand the disease better.
Daily Trust gathered that Hajiya Badiya is currently giving care to about 3,000 sickle cell anaemia patients in Kaduna.
