The Chief Executive Officer, Crown Surgery and Medical Service, Lagos, Dr Ebun Sonaiya, has said that health insurance would help in achieving Universal Health Coverage.
Sonaiya, who was the keynote speaker at the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Healthcare Providers’ Association of Nigeria held on Monday in Lagos, noted that UHC would ensure that people had access to health care without being scared of paying for the services.
“A strong and efficient health system that is people-centred, as well as a public-private partnership, is needed to achieving the UHC. More services must, therefore, be included in the UHC, such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, mental health and many more,” he said.
The National President of the association, Dr Umar Sanda, in his welcome address, said the theme of the conference, Awakening Health Insurance in Nigeria to Achieving Universal Health Coverage, was chosen because of the turbulence in the progress of the health insurance scheme in Nigeria.
“We have many hurdles to cross, but they are surmountable. Nigeria population is growing, but our health indices are bad. The budget allocation for health by the Federal Government and the states is not encouraging. Many smaller African countries are overtaking Nigeria in achieving UHC,” Sanda said.
He noted that the health insurance scheme could provide a solution to health financing, which had become a major challenge in the country.
