Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) activists in Bauchi State have warned against the incessant hostility towards pregnant women with disabilities.
They gave the advise during the MNCH quarterly meeting in Bauchi saying that health workers hostility towards pregnant women with disabilities was harmful to mother and child.
An Executive Director of a Non Governmental Organisation ( NGO) Health Disability Initiative, Mr Mainas Ayuba said that discrimination being experienced by people with disabilities in health facilities discouraged many women from seeking health care freely. According to him, women of child bearing age among the women with disabilities were always subjected to insult and harassment from health workers.
Mr Ayuba called on Bauchi State Government to revisit the disability law earlier passed by the previous administration , regretting that government’s decision to scrap the law was counterproductive.
He implored the state government to recruit staff with skills in sign language to serve as interpreters in health facilities across the state.
