A major way to reduce deaths of newborn children in the country is to build the capacity of health workers, a paediatrician and Wife of the Kebbi State governor, Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu has said.
She said doing so would have significant impact on the morale of health workers, improve childcare and also reduce neonatal deaths.

She gave the advice during the Annual Scientific Summit of the Nigeria Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISOMN). The summit was held with support from the Kebbi State government, UNICEF and Pathfinder.
A statement from her foundation yesterday said highlights of the summit which drew professionals involved in newborn care from within and outside the country was a five-day training for health workers in Kebbi State on essential newborn care and various methods of respiration.
Those trained included nurses, community health workers and midwives in Argungu, Birnin Kebbi and Jega local government areas of the state.
About 300 women in Jega were sensitized on exclusive breastfeeding, hand washing, kangaroo mother care for small low birth weight babies, and immunization among others. Sixty doctors were also trained on neonatal resuscitation and respiratory support at Kalgo Medical Centre.
