The federal governnent has called on healthcare managers to rise to the occasion of protecting their patients from avoidable mishap during treatment.
Speaking at the conference on Healthcare Management in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole represented by Dr OmobolanleOlowu, said it is sad that many patients who have approached the health facilities for solutions are left disappointed after the initial condition turns worst due to wrong misdiagnosis.
Adewole also noted that section 2 of part 3 of the 2014 NHActs elaborated on the rights of the patient and what they can do to seek redress.
However, the Country Representative, World Health Organisaion, Mr WondimagegnehuAlemu, urged the federal government to formulate patient centred policies that will ensure that they get quality healthcare services and to also protect them from wrong practices by Doctors. In his keynote address, Alemu explained that the effects of wrong practices by Doctors are most responsible for medical tourism in the country, as patients have clearly lost confidence in the health system of the country.
He said many patients are still suffering from wrong misdiagnosis, medication errors including antimicrobial resistance, healthcare associated infections and surgery related complications.
“There is much work to be done in the country to achieve patient safety as Nigeria does not have data on patient safety issues,” he added.
The WHO Country Rep therefore advised the federal government to also build the capacity of healthcare workers to mitigate safety and quality risks in healthcare.
