The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to help increase awareness of mental health disorders in the country. The National President of the PSN, Mr Sam Ohuabunwa, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ilorin, stressing the need to increase awareness of mental health in the country.
Arguing that Nigerians had poor knowledge of mental health disorders, which could degenerate and result in suicide, Ohuabunwa advised the government to act now and not wait until people with mental disorder start manifesting its symptoms publicly before doing something about it.

The PSN president observed that many factors could lead to mental health conditions in the country and they include societal, economical reasons, as well as family and medical histories of the afflicted.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the poor level of identifying and managing mental health disorders in the country, he added, “Unless mental health disorder is identified with, people can deliberately misuse over-the- counter drugs to commit suicide because any drug misused becomes poisonous.”
Ohuabunwa described drug abuse as a major factor that must be dealt with, stressing that the only way to check the vice was to increase awareness of its existence.
