The International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA) today announced a global partnership to improve nurses’ access to continuing education.
The two organisations will work to create the largest central resource for continuing nursing education to change and improve nurses’ access to education courses around the world.
“With over 130 member national nursing organisations around the world, ICN is committed to ensuring that nurses have access to the highest quality education possible,” said Dr Frances Hughes, ICN’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are excited about this new partnership to enable nurses, no matter where they live and work, to get the best and most up-to-date education. It is important not only for advancing the profession but also for improving consumer/patient outcomes and safety.” Through this partnership, the WCEA will provide free Learning Management Systems to education providers to enable them to create and upload educational content to the ICN Continuing Education Network. Nursing associations and other organisations will be provided with Education Portals connected to the Continuing Education Network, and the administrators of each Portal can select what education they would like from the Network for their nurses’ continuing education needs.
This is an opportunity for national nursing associations to offer a unique service to their members and to showcase their own content. The platform will broaden and ease the access to the successful ICN Continuing Education programme portfolio and will generate interactivity and network opportunities for all.
“While the platform charges for some of the education, many of the courses are completely free,” explained Graham Hellier, Founder of WCEA. “Those educators who do charge for their courses are encouraged to provide their education for free to nurses in developing countries. The initiative will therefore help to bridge the gap between high and low resource countries.”
