Dr. Lanre Tejuosho, Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, has said that investment in healthcare sector had been consistently lower over the last two decades compared to countries with similar economic status.
Tejuosho added that in 2016, the total government health expenditure was N588 billion which was 0.6 per cent of the GDP, of which only 7.9 of the public which is less than 4 per cent of the country’s population, was covered, predominantly Federal Government civil servants and their loved ones. He made the remarks recently while speaking on budget implementation and the oversight function of the legislature at the MAMAYE Day 2018 with theme “Improving Nigeria’s Health Budget Performance.”
Tejuosho said the N51 billion of 2018 basic healthcare appropriation fund submitted to the National Assembly had been increased by the legislature to N55 billion for the purpose of implementing the 2014 National Health Act.
The Act, he said, would benefit at least 5,000 Nigerians in every local government and access to functional primary healthcare centres.
He added that Nigerian government spent less on health than nearly every country in the world due to the under priority of the sector as health spending is dominated by out of pocket expenditure.
