No fewer than seven were feared dead yesterday, following suspected Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) outbreak in Jibia local government area of Katsina State.
LEADERSHIP Friday investigations revealed that the death of five males and three females were reported in Gangawa and Jaja villages in the area close to the outskirts of the state capital.

Local community heads, who disclosed this to the relevant authorities yesterday, said that in one of the worst hit wards, Bugaje community, over 100 residents of Anguwa Kuka, Kashemu and Dambawa villages lived in fear of the disease, having contracted whooping cough. Confirming this report to newsmen, the permanent secretary in the State Ministry of Health, Dr Kabir Mustapha, said as soon as the state government got wind of the suspected outbreak, it mobilised human and material resources to curtail the spread of the ailment from the affected communities.
Meanwhile, there is increasing fear that the advent of CSM could be triggered by the sudden return of hot weather as Harmattan recedes around the state. This fear is heightened by report from Jibia and Dutsinma where deaths of a total of nine persons had been reported in less than a week.
