The Kogi State chapter of the Medical and Health Workers' Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) on Tuesday threatened to embark on a statewide strike action should the state government go ahead with its decision to outsource their services to private firm.
The Kogi state chairman of the union, Comrade Onuh Edoka, who spoke at its stakeholders meeting in Lokoja, said the union would also not hesitate to take the government to court over the matter.
The union, while expressing concerns over the security threat posed by the proposed privatisation of their services, observed that premises inspection was the prerogative of the local government areas and urged government to rescind its decision on the matter. According to Edoka, the issue became imperative as the state govearnment had concluded plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a private organisation to carry out the duties of trained environmental health officers in the state.
He said rather than outsourcing the services, government should look inward and allow the environmental health officers across the 21 local government areas of the state to perform their duties.
The union chairman stated that members of the union were "able and capable" to deliver on their duties if the right atmosphere was made available to them by government.
Edoka warned against the dangers inherent in bringing "total strangers" who are not professional and are not known to the people to perform such delicate duties.
