The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode has urged medical practitioners and other regulatory bodies in the medical profession to join his administration in weeding out ‘’quacks’’ in the state.
The Governor, who said that the “Quacks”among medical personnel have done enough damages to the health of the public, spoke at the 11th induction ceremony for medical doctors by the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) and unveiling of roll of honours on various individuals who have contributed to the growth and development of the college.
Speaking through his Deputy, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, at the event, Ambode urged the 54 newly inducted doctors to strictly abide by the provisions of the Oath of professional practice to which they have pledged by ensuring that they deploy their acquired knowledge and skills specifically to save lives and offer succour to people in distress.
The Governor urged the newly inductees to join government and their senior colleagues in the medical field to curb the activities of the “Quacks’’ in the medical practice.
Reiterating that his administration placed high premium on the healthcare and wellness of the people of the state, Ambode said that the state government had made huge investment in the health sector. He charged the inductees to always arm themselves with the vision of the founding fathers of the college.
“As we march on with our quest to develop infrastructure that would support the administration and management of a Mega City, we are also desirous of putting in place everything necessary to enhance the capacity of healthcare and wellness of our people’’ Ambode stated.
Earlier in his welcome address, the provost of the college, Prof Babatunde Solagberu, said the college has witnessed unprecedented transformation through massive infrastructural development, rehabilitation of roads and lightning all round the college since the beginning of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration.
While thanking the state government for the composition of an excellent governing council, he informed that the college would coincidentally be producing the first set of dental surgeons by the state University College of Medicine in Nigeria when Lagos will be celebrating its 50 years in 2017.
He stated that there are 35 medical schools in Nigeria, only nine dental schools exist and only LASUCOM is state-owned.
