The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has announced the names of three leading experts in disasters who will present at a main session on disaster preparedness and nursing in conflict during the ICN Congress in Barcelona, Spain, 27 May-1 June 2017. Day Two of the Congress will focus on Sustainable health care, disasters and conflicts with Dr Ian Norton, Dr Pilar Fernandez and Dr Aiko Yamamoto taking part in one of the main sessions of the day.
Dr Ian Nortonheads the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Emergency Medical Team Unit. Dr Norton was deployed for over fivemonths to the West African Ebola outbreak of 2014/15 and led the coordination of over 60 medical teams in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia as well as the design and build of five large Ebola treatment centres in Monrovia. He led the coordination of 149 medical teams in Nepal during the earthquakes of April and May 2015, and is involved in the trauma response coordination in Iraq, Yemen among other interventions around the world. Previously the director of disaster preparedness and response at the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre (NCCTRC)inDarwin, Australia,Dr Norton is the lead author of the WHO global classification and standards for Foreign Medical Team deployment tosudden onset disasters.
Heleads the development of a global registry of EMTs and the increasing role of WHO in their quality assurance and coordination, and in shaping the Global Health Emergency Workforce as part of WHOs emergency reform agenda. In thisrole,he also manages training and capacity building of disaster and outbreak response teams across all regions and in countries at highest risk. Third Vice President of the Consejo General de Enfermería in Spain, Dr Pilar Fernandezisthe current director of the Escuela Internacional de Ciencias de la Salud (EICS) where she is responsible for introducing disaster response as part of the nursing curriculum. Her initiative has led to the development of crisis situation re-enactment modules to prepare students in realistic conditions and with the involvement of a multi-disciplinary team. She has a PhD in socio-sanitary science and humanitarian medicine from the University of Complutense in Madrid.
Chairperson of the World Society of Disaster Nursing and theJapanese Society of Disaster, Dr Aiko Yamamotois Professor at the Research Institute of Nursing Care for People & Community, University of Hyogo, Japan, which has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing in Disasters and Health Emergency Management.
Since the devastating Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in 1995, Japan, Dr Yamamotohas been an active participantin the field of disaste nursing, conducting research into the health conditions ofsurvivors. She initiateda doctoral and master degree programmes in disaster nursing at theUniversity of Hyogo, Japan, and participated in development Networks to dispatch nurses after disasters.
The three disaster expertsjoin an ever growing panel of high profile speakers who have confirmed their participation in the ICN Congress–the largest gathering of nurses in the world.
