The Senior Programme Manager, Society for Family Health, Mr. Christopher Dangana, has said that health professionals in the private sector have a role to play if malaria is to be eradicated in Nigeria.
Dangana said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo, Osun State, on Monday, on the sidelines of the review on the effectiveness of Global Fund Malaria New Funding Model Grant.
Dangana, who is a pharmacist, said more than 60 per cent of Nigerians visited private health facilities and chemists before coming to public hospitals.

He said, “The private sector is unique because if you go to any facility now, take their data and analyse, you will discover that malaria treatment generates about 70 per cent of these sector’s income. “But we have discovered that almost half of the ‘so called’ malaria cases treated at such facilities is not actually malaria. We are calling on doctors to test and confirm cases that are brought to them before they treat.”
The Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Global Fund Malaria Project, SFH, Mr. Ifeanyi Udoye, lamented the number of malaria deaths among children under the age of five and called for private sector involvement in disease control strategies.
The Director of Health Services, Osun State Ministry of Health, Dr. Gbenga Adepoju, who spoke at a workshop on malaria eradication, however urged children and pregnant women slept under treated mosquito nets to reduce their risk of getting the infection.
