A public health practitioner, Ms Shola Kogbodoku, has said that the number of patients suffering brain injury and stroke, especially among the aged, had continued to increase in Nigeria without the Federal Government doing enough to stop the trend.
She said this last Saturday on the sidelines of the opening of the Laricare Rehabilitation Centre in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
Describing stroke and brain injuries as ‘hidden disabilities’ claiming the lives of many Nigerians, Kogbodoku called on government at all levels to intervene and put an end to the ugly development.
Stressing that government’s intervention would go a long way in addressing the situation, she said, “Brain injuries and stroke are ‘hidden disabilities’ and the number of patients is quite high in the country.
“The situation is so bad that I am calling on the government at all levels to intervene and stop this ugly trend. They should also support the centre which is first of its kind in the country in order to reduce this havoc.”
Kogbodoku said the aim of the centre was to bring positive change to the lives of people affected by stroke and brain injuries.
She said, “Through this Rehab we will help the inmates to rebuild their confidence, and give them the best quality of life, irrespective of their challenging circumstances. They will also acquire skills.
“Our vision is to help the patients suffering these ailments to maximise their ability to face the future and be able to play meaningful roles within their respective families and communities.”
One of the directors of the centre, Mr. Samson Olawunmi, noted that studies had shown that many patients failed to utilise rehabilitation centres in the past and as a result, there must be enough awareness to sensitise them on the need to go to such places.
