The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital UMTH says it incurred N150 million in treating victims of Boko Haram insurgency in two years.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Abdurrahman Tahir, said yesterday during the commissioning of an upgraded facility of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the UMTH in Maiduguri that it spent the money between 2009 and 2011, and had so far received only N40 million reimbursement.
He said, “We are having enormous challenges. We incurred N150 million on treating the victims of Boko Haram insurgency. We have not even compiled from year 2011 to date. We forwarded the memo to NEMA and they gave N30 million while Borno State Government gave N10 million. Up till now we are still expecting the intervention from them to boost our facility.”
Prof. Tahir saluted the courage of ARD members in the UMTH for staying to save lives during the years of intense bombing in Borno State when many health workers were killed, prompting many others to resign or relocate from the North-east.
The National President of the Association of Resident Doctors, Dr. Ibrahim Kuburi, explained that upgrading the existing ARD complex became necessary to meet current innovations.
“We are extremely glad for commissioning of upgrade of our complex. I have been to different places in this country. I can tell you this is best I have seen,” Kuburi stated.
