The President, Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGMPN) Dr Frank Odafen has urged the Federal Government to pay attention to health, if it must have a vibrant economy.
Speakingat an investiture of patrons of the association, he said, it is sad that government has only been able to give less than two percent to health from national budget.
He said, “the WHO standard is that 15% of the national budget should go to health, but now, less than two percent goes to health and most of it is recurrent, there is nothing for development,
“Things have not really changed remarkably; the problem is not lack of capacity”, he added.
DrOdafen said lack of facilities was why the public hospitals look like mere consultant sites.
He further said that Doctors have been struggling to practice because they do not really have money to establish, adding that it is part of the reason why seeking healthcare services at the private facilities is expensive.
In Nigeria, if you borrow one million to establish, you think of paying three hundred thousand and it must be paid within one year, what do you expect the doctor to do?” he queried.
