A medical consultant with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr Innocent Abang, has called on lawmakers in both state and federal parliaments to enact laws to check quackery in medical institutions in Nigeria.
He said the rate of impersonation and quackery has become alarming thereby impacting negatively against the medical profession.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Abang, who is vying for chairmanship of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State in the upcoming election, said there is need for enhancement of quality medical practice by the engagement of subspecialization and advocacy for Private Public Partnership (PPP) in the health sector. He said this will stem the existing inter-professional rivalry in the health sector.
Abang also urged the federal government to “ensure that the many health issues ranging from the poor funding of government tertiary hospitals and outdated equipment, are tackled.”
