The Guild of Medical Directors a body of medical doctors who own and run private hospitals and clinics in Nigeria, has solicited the support of Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust, towards sensitizing Nigerians on hepatitis and activities of the association.
Speaking while on a visit to the Media Trust head office in Abuja yesterday, the National President of the guild, Dr Tony Philips, said cases of hepatitis were on the rise and if not properly handled might become an epidemic like meningitis and Lassa fever among others.
He said hepatitis was also the theme of this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and scientific conference of the association scheduled for May26
and 27 in Abuja.
Philips said the private sector was key in addressing health issues as evidenced in the case of Ebola which was first identified and tackled by a member of the guild.
The Chairman, Local Organizing Committee of the conference, Dr Wisdom Ihejieto, said about 20 million Nigerians live with hepatitis, adding that
Media Trust was a key partner in creating awareness about the disease and measures to be taken to reduce its prevalence.
The Chairperson, Association of Guild of Medical Directors’ Spouses, Mrs Queen Philips said as part of the preconference activities, they would carry out an
outreach to internally displaced persons camps for free Hepatitis screening.
