Doctors under the aegis of the Medical Guild have warned their colleagues not to admit patients on chairs or treat them in an unconducive environment.
This was contained in a communiqué issued by the Chairman of the guild, Dr Saliu Oseni and his Secretary, Dr Oluwole Olusanya, after its Ordinary General Meeting in Lagos.
It was themed, “Human Resources Development as a Tool for Improved Service Delivery in the Lagos State Health Sector” According to them, many doctors who try to accommodate patients in these circumstances to save lives suffer the consequences of such without the backing of their employers – the state government.

Oseni stated, “In view of the perpetual punishment meted out to our members following the consequences of the unethical approach to the management of patients, we, therefore, say that no doctor should review or admit a patient on the chair or floor until there is a conducive space for proper attention. “Patients should be referred once there is no bed space, and the doctors will not be liable for such patients within the area of service once the doctor has not taken responsibility.
“The consequences of admission of patients in the above non ethical situation will-be strictly the liability of the hospital and the Lagos State Government. Doctors should review patients and ensure appropriate documentation using their ethical discretion to attend to patients.”
They, however, called on the state government to partner private hospitals to create more bed spaces for patients who cannot be accommodate in its hospitals.
The guild, which commended the state government for the inhouse training residents doctors were exposed to, also called for more within and outside the service to improve the capacity of its human resource.
“While the congress appreciates efforts of the Lagos State Government at improving infrastructures, in its facilities, the guild feels that immediate implementation of the corrected CONMESS salary scale will improve the welfare of the doctors,” he added.
