The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), FCT branch, has called on the federal government to train medical laboratory scientists on the detection of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
In a communiqué issued after the association’s maiden annual scientific conference in Abuja, signed by the chapter’s chairman, Ndubuisi Ebitea, and two other executives, the medical lab scientists said while GMOs have merits, caution should be applied in their acceptability in Nigeria because of weak institutions, inadequate diagnostic infrastructure for detection of GMO related products and the control and detection of its consequences.
They said the GMOs could be a solution in resolving world crisis of acute famine especially amongst developing nations but that the long-term adverse effects without research was a source of major concern to the association, since there has been very little testing and research done on Genetically Modified foods and drugs in the country. The medical lab scientists said some genetically modified products were modified using bacteria and viruses thus the fear that there could be an emergence of new diseases.
They called on the government and other stakeholders to pay more attention to GMOs and make provisions for further research and studies on them.
Ebitea said the conference was organised to provide information on GMOs from all sides of the divide for the members of the association, key policy makers and the general public.
The Acting Registrar, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Mr Tosan Erhabor, urged laboratories in the country to key into the national accreditation processes to meet up with international standards and eradicate quackery.
