As Cerebrospinal Meningitis rages across the country, the Ondo State Government has warned residents against handshake and kissing.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Oni Taiye, who spoke in Akure, the state capital on Tuesday, said the state's emergency, preparedness and response team had swung into action to prevent the outbreak of the disease in the state.
Taiye said there was a need for residents of the state to " avoid being in an overcrowded environment, ensure proper ventilation, increase hand washing, maintain proper hygiene, avoid shaking hands, avoid unnecessary petting, kissing, and cover their mouth when coughing and sneezing.
"While calling for caution, he noted that 2,528 cases and 328 deaths had been reported across 16 states of the federation. According to him, some of the proactive measures taken by the state is the sensitisation of health workers at all levels and an aggrtssive sensitisation of the public on symptoms and steps to take to nip the menace in the bud.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has said no case of meningitis has been recorded in the state.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, in a statement on Tuesday, said though the outbreak could spread to any part of the country, no case -had been confirmed yet.
Idris stated, "Though, seasonal meningitis outbreak usually affects mainly the Northern States that fall within the meningitis belt of the country, it is not impossible that outbreaks can occur in any part of the country, Lagos inclusive, in view of the phenomenal climatic change as well as the high human migration.
"However, I need to state that no case of CSM has been recorded in Lagos State. I urge the good people of the state to remain calm and to report suspected cases to the nearest public health facility."
