The Federal Ministry of Health and partners have appealed to the National Assembly to ensure the release for the one percent consolidated revenue to the health sector as enshrined in the National Health Act, 2014.
The Hon Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole represented by the Desk Officer Universal Health Coverage, FMOH, Dr. Nneka Orji and other partners made the appeal on Tuesday 12 December, 2017 while commemorating the 2017 World Universal Health Coverage, in Abuja.
Adewole said that the Universal Health Coverage (UHC)is a task of providing quality affordable healthcare service to all Nigerians as such the Ministry of Health cannot do it alone, there must be partnership between public and private stakeholders in the health sector. Adewole said” we must recognize that Universal Health Coverage is a task that requires partnership. Part of the strategy is this coalition, that is why we are asking all other health partners to work with us; we are asking the legislature to work with us it is a collective responsibility, it is achievable and doable in Nigeria.”
Prof. Adewole called on the National Assembly, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Budget and Planning and other stakeholders involved to fast-track the release of the 1% consolidated revenue to the health sector.
“Once the 1% (percent) in the National budget is released , the next step is to have it in Naira and Kobo, making the appropriate structure that would ensure that people have access to quality healthcare”
In his remarks, the Chairman House Committee, Cross River State, Dr. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey said that it was important to create awareness on the efforts made by government and development partners in improving the health system in country.
He said that the legislature had keyed into UHC seriously especially when the Senate president and Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, launched the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage to highlight the role of legislators in healthcare services.
He commended the National Assembly for approving the 1% consolidated revenue for health”.
He further said “we need more funding from government, I want to appeal to all State’s Houses of Assembly to ensure that adequate provision is made in their state’s budget to support the healthcare services in this country”.
