The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has called on the Federal Government to set up public health laboratories across the country.
The association said the move would enhance proper surveillance against further spread of monkey pox and other infectious diseases in the country.

President of the association, Alhaji Toyosi Raheem made the call yesterday in Abuja. Raheem said medical laboratory scientists and other health professionals should be invited to brainstorm and provide solutions on how to tackle the ugly health situation in the country, instead of consulting only medical doctors.
“We have over 24,000 well trained medical lab scientist in Nigeria, therefore it is unfortunate that blood samples of monkey pox are taken to Dakar, Senegal for test when we have all it takes to tackle such diseases,” he lamented.
The President stated that the prolonged absence of governing boards for regulatory agencies like the Medical Lab Science Council (MLSCN), Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) among others in the health sector has brought about disorder and improper planning.
He called on the Federal Government to immediately reconstitute the governing boards of teaching hospitals.
