Over hundred community leaders in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo state, yesterday, agreed to lead a campaign for immunization exercise in the state.
The event took place at the local government head-quarters, during a sensitization seminar organized by the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Imo state.
According to the NOA’s Assistant Director of Programme, Mrs. Maureen Oparaji, the reason for the grassroots sensitization was because of the rumour of the monkey pox vaccine in the Southeast region, which led to parents refusing their children to be immunized.
Her message to the people said: “We have come here to tell our people the truth.We noticed that some months after the rumour that Army people were going to our schools injecting our children with monkey pox vaccine, our parents have refused to allow their children get immunized. We are here to tell you that there is nothing like monkey pox vaccine. What we have is immunization vaccine and the immunization vaccine is good for the health of our children.
“So, anybody telling you that the Army is giving immunization vaccine is not true. What happened was that after the Operation Python Dance in the Southeast zone, the Army embarked on their yearly medical outreach and because of fear, people started spreading rumour of Army killing our children with Monkey pox vaccine.”
The event had in attendance, Imo traditional rulers, local government health officers, community leaders and women groups from the various villages.
