Most Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO’s) in the country are operating illegally, Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Professor Yusuf Usman has said.

He said many of them had licenses that have expired for an upward period of 5-6 years ago but were still operating. “When I came I called the HMO’s for a meeting here in Abuja. I told them what I found is unacceptable; that we the NHIS had been paying them on behalf of the enrolees and their families three months ahead of services being provided but they do not pay hospitals.
“They were using the money to buy foreign exchange and when our patients go to hospitals, they get treated like lepers; not with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
