The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Federal Health Institution Sector (NANNM-FHI) have called on the presidency, Senate and House of Representative to declare a state of emergency in the health industry at all levels.
According to the statement, the state of emergency is to help resolve the issues that bother on health administration, practice, headship, representation, benefits and welfare of all stakeholders in the industry.
This was issued in a statement by the National Public Relation Officer, NANNM, Aliyu Shehu, on Sunday in Abuja.
Shehu said that the resolution of issues in contention with members of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) would open up a chain of industrial actions by other unions and associations in the health industry. He noted that their issues predate those of the NARD which the Federal Ministry of Health (FHoM) and Labour had left unattended to, in spite of court judgments.
He listed some of the unresolved issues by the FMoH and Labour to include chronic shortage of both general and specialised manpower in the various institutions.
He named others to include inadequate provision of medical consumables and services, stagnation, re-designation and demotion of our members.
He said stoppage, non-restoration of payment of teaching allowance to our deserving members despite enabling circular, non-payment of arrears owed from 2011 till date in most hospitals were also part of the issues.
“Non-payment of uniform allowance owed from 2008 till date in some hospitals, non –payment of arrears of relativity allowance and non deduction and non-remittance of union dues by some hospital managements are also included,’’ he said.
Shehu added that the Union through its National Secretariat (NANNM) had engaged the FMOH and Labour and other relevant Agencies severally on the above issues.
He therefore called on the government to do the needful within the window period to avoid industrial disharmony as the patience of the association was already over-taxed.
He also urged the Presidency to beam its searchlight on the administration of health in this country.
Shehu however added that the association would not be held responsible for any breakdown in services.
