The Nasarawa State Government has shut down 42 illegal hospitals and medical laboratories in various parts of Karu Local Government Area of the state.
The hospitals and medical laboratories were accused of operating without licences.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Iya, who led a team of inspectors during the operation, disclosed this on Saturday.
Iya said the sealing off of the unregistered medical centres was necessary so as to stem the proliferation of illegal hospitals, clinics and laboratories, which he said posed serious danger to citizens, in the state. He, however, clarified that the exercise was not targeted at anyone, but was embarked upon “to ensure sanity in the system and bring health practitioners in the area back to the right path.”
Expressing worry over the proliferation of illegal health facilities in the Karu Local Government Area of the state, Iya stressed that any health practitioner who wanted to operate in the state must follow the due process.
He added that the state ministry of health would not relent in its effort to curb illegality in the health sector.
He warned health practitioners in the state to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession “as anyone caught indulging in illegal acts would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law of the land.”
He affirmed that the ministry would continue to discharge its duties diligently until the system was completely sanitised.
