The National Hospital, Abuja, has conducted free health screening for residents of Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The exercise was part of the ‘Rapid Result Initiative’ programme which is aimed at providing “better health for all.”
A medical personnel with the hospital, Dr Charles Ononiwu, said the screening exercise was intended to improve health care for people suffering from diseases in rural communities. He said: “After the screening, those who are diagnosed with illness will be sent to our social workers, to be sure they are indigent and cannot finance their treatment. Once they meet the requirement, surgery or treatment will commence and all expenses will be paid for by the government.
The Gomo (chief) of Kuje, Alhaji Haruna Tanko Jubril, commended the effort of the government, saying it would go a long way to assist the people.
Hajara Emma, a blind woman, and one of the beneficiaries of the programme, said she was happy that government came to her aid, and she hoped to see again.
The exercise would be completed within 100 days and 10,000 people were expected to be treated nationwide.
