The Nnamdi Azikiwe University teaching hospital nnewi has Confirmed a case of LASSA Fever. A patient (medical doctor from Asaba) was admitted via A&E on the 15th August 2016 on account of Clinical features suggestive of VHF.
The MTOC Immediately informed the CMAC, who is the Nauth chairman of the infectious disease control committee about the case and he provided PPE to the health team on duty. Blood samples were collected and sent to Irrua Specialist teaching hospital the same day and the result came out after 48hrs, 17th August, 2016 (yesterday evening) to be positive.
However the patient died few hours after adimission. The bed of the patient has been properly cleaned and carbonized. The Nauth Management immediately convoked a meeting of all the health team that were involved in the management of the index case yesterday and briefed them on the national protocol on Lassa fever.
All members of the health team that managed the patient directly were classified under low risk and they are currently on surveillance
Our CMD Prof Igwegbe has informed the HMOH; Prof Adewole Isaac about the case and the minister has directed the National Infection Epidemiology unit to come to Nauth tomorrow for adequate contact tracing and containing of the disease.
Recall that most centres in south south ( UBTH, FMC Asaba, UPTH, ISTH Irrua) are currently on strike, therefore let us try to apply a high index of suspicion while managing our patients.
Also universal precautions must be adhered during all procedures and you must not treat any suspected case of VHF without PPE.
