The Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu has promised to assist both states and local government areas in the country with technical support in terms of training of health workers to help fight Lassa and Dengue fever viruses nationwide.
Ihekweazu who disclosed this in Abuja during official commissioning of NCDC website in Abuja recently, assured Nigerians that his agency was working tirelessly to see that the scourge of Lassa fever and other haemorrhagic fevers ravaging the country was brought to an end.
He said the aim of opening a website was to provide the general public with access at all times to information, and also get feedback which will communicate issues of disease outbreak or emergencies, disease control and prevention to the agency. “One aspect I am going to take very seriously is to support the states and local government councils in training of workers and ensure that the capacity of people working at that levels is improved to provide efficiency. So we are working hard with our partners in that regard,” he said. Speaking on the commissioned website, he said that the site will serve as information base where people can access all kinds of information they need to know about NCDC programmes and how the agency is doing to prevent and control diseases in Nigeria and in the ECOWAS region.
“The website will be the centre where can access information but we will use several channels. We are going to use radio, television and other channels that will reach Nigerians wherever they may be.
“You remember during the outbreak of Ebola, there was a rumour that spread very quickly about some acclaimed cure that was apparently false. If we had these channels operational then we would have responded immediately to those rumours but because we didn’t respond to that quickly as we should have, that led to people in many places either bathing or drinking salt water.
