Most big hospitals in the FCT do not offer services for trauma, depression and mental disorders, the Chief Executive Officer of Synapse Clinics, Dr Vincent Udenze, has said.
The mental health specialist and psychiatrist, who made this observation, noted that most pregnant mothers often went into depression after and before child birth but were not treated for such symptoms because the hospitals do not offer such services due to stigma.
Speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Garki Specialist Hospital under their Public Private Partnership (PPP), Dr Udenze said the partnership would allow Nigerians have all the care they desire under one roof. “After major surgeries the patients fall into depression, stroke patients have mental issues, who offers them care after they are treated for the major ailment that brought them to the hospital? Most times, the patients are left to handle their symptoms on their own, which is dangerous,” he said.
He said Garki hospital will be the first to have the Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Machine (RTMS) installed to treat mentally disturbed patients.
The Medical Director of Garki Specialist Hospital, Dr Nyomudim Essen, who said the signing of the MOU is to commemorate the hospital’s 10 years in operation, added that the services would enhance the profile of the hospital to provide better care.
