The Consultant Nephrologist in-charge of the Renal Unit at the Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Prof. Adewale Akinsola, has identified the lack of kidney donors as one of the challenges facing patients with renal failure in Nigeria.
Akinsola said this in an interview with our correspondent on Monday during the inauguration of Good News Kidney Resource Centre donated to the hospital by the families of Dr. David and Mildred Ayandiran as well as Mr. Olatunji and Henrietta Bello.
The kidney care specialist blamed hypertension, diabetes and infection for the high prevalence of kidney diseases in Nigeria.
According to him, most patients with kidney disease present their cases at a stage when dialysis or transplantation are the only available options. Akintola said, “The few patients that undergo dialysis do so at a very great expense. Dialysis facilities have inherent challenges of frequent breakdown/inadequate technology support. The main treatment modality for kidney failure is transplantation. Though it is more cost effective, it has logistic challenges particularly due to the lack of kidney donors.”
He said the centre would start kidney transplantation very soon to ensure that Nigerians would not need to travel outside the country for the procedure.
According to the Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, Prof. Mathews Ojo, the centre, which cost about N80 million to build and equip, will offer flexible payment plans for indigent patients in agreement with their relatives and religious affliations.
He said the centre would also afford medical students the opportunities to have efficient training in renal care.
The two families said they decided to give back to the society because some Nigerians died of kidney disease without knowing.
