It is public knowledge that there are not enough doctors in the South African public health system.
The government is looking at a simple intervention which could speed up the production of doctors at our medical schools.

Wits University has already taken the initiative through a programme called the graduate entry medical programme. Graduates in possession of a degree are admitted to the new programme that allows them to complete medical school in only four years. On top of this, there is also a need to shift some tasks from doctors to nurses.
This can be done without having a bad effect on quality and standard.
If nurses are given responsibilities, we can train them to become doctors within four years, and there would be fewer shortages in under-serviced areas.
