The Nigerian minister of health, Isaac Adewole has announced the indefinite extension of the suspension of the executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf.
Mr Yusuf has been on suspension since July 6, 2017, after he was accused of fraud. Based on a directive from the Minister Adewole, to allow for a fair and uninterrupted investigation of the various allegations levied against the NHIS boss.
According to Premiu Times, following the conclusion of the investigation, in a letter to the embattled NHIS chief dated October 5, Mr Adewole indicated that the committee has submitted its report.
He also said the report has been forwarded to President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr Adewole then said the committee found Mr. Yusuf “culpable in many areas” of his performance.
Adewole also said: “I am further extending your suspension from office pending the decision of the President."
His suspension had generated controversies with the House of Representatives asking that he be reinstated.
Mr Yusuf had also replied the minister that he would not obey the suspension, saying the minister had no powers to suspend him.
Apart from Mr Yusuf, eight other top management staff of the agency were also suspended over corruption allegations. Attahiru Ibrahim has served as acting executive secretary.
He has been accused of corrupt expenditure to the tune of N292 million which he allegedly spent on health care training “without recourse to any appropriate approving authority.”
