The Niger State Government yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to the tune of N1.29 billion with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to strengthen primary health care.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello signed for the state government, while Dr. Chris Elias, President Global Development of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation signed for the foundation.

The four-year agreement which will take off next year is aimed at improving access to Medicare and service delivery at the rural areas, and the gesture was also expected to generate about 2,500 job opportunities in various strata of the health sector of the state. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Sani Bello lamented the collapse of the health sector and lack of access to qualitative medicare, especially in the rural areas, a development that he said had led to high mortality rate among the people.
He said his administration was committed to rebuilding the system with a sustainable approach.
Dr. Chris Elias, the President of Global Development of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said the foundation aimed to support the state through systems transformation.
