Nigeria ranks top with the highest number of people living with tuberculosis in Africa, Health minister has disclosed.
Dr Osagie Ehanire, Hon Minister of State for Health, stated this shortly after he commissioned the National External Quality Assurance Laboratory at National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Training Centre, Zaria on Friday He emphasised that, Nigeria ranks top among the 30 highest TB burdened countries in the world, while it is first in Africa. According to him, statistics of the 2017 World Health Organisation global TB reports, indicate that, there are 10.4 million new TB cases world wide.
Ehanire lamented that the emergence of a drug resistant type of TB, has compounded the challenges of TB control efforts in the country, adding that, children also bear the burdenchallenge to the right of the children.
He lauded the Medical Laboratory Science Council, for donating a well equipped, state of the art laboratory, describing it as worthy of emulation.
Earlier in an interview, Dr Tosan Erhabor, Acting Registrar, Medical Laboratory Science, described the effort as a milestone achievement geared towards enhancing health care delivery in the country “The tempo can be sustained by putting our priority right as a country, once that is done, Nigeria can achieve greater results.
“With the results that are coming out in line with present administration, Nigerians would remain proud despite the dwindling resources.”
He said the idea of bringing the minister, is to see for himself that such facilities do exist in the country. He urged the centre to ensure proper utilisation of the facility meant for development of the health sector of the country.
