Professor Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi, Department of Pathology, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has lauded the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) for producing 200 pathology and 67 radiology fellows in the last seven years.
“This is very commendable as it ensures that our tertiary medical facilities and undergraduate and postgraduate educational programmes are sustained in these two medical fields,” he explained.
Rafindadi stated this in a keynote address at the Annual General Meeting and Maiden Scientific Conference of the Association Radiologists in Nigeria (ARIN), in Sokoto “In modern times, clinical care of patients relies heavily on the specialties of radiology and pathology for diagnosis. To a large extent also for screening purposes, some level of prevention, prognosis, and follow up, particularly in cancer patients,” he asserted.
He however called for the redistribution of the various types of medical specialists which he noted were concentrated at the tertiary level of care in the country.
The Professor asserted: “The situation in most public tertiary hospitals where most of us practice is that you find sometimes up to 5 or more consultants in a department where the annual output justifies the employment of only one consultant,” he stated.
