The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kwara branch has called on all levels of government to make the treatment of depression free.
The Chairman NMA Kwara, Dr Kunle Olawepo made the call in a statement to mark this year’s World Health Day saying it would reduce cases of suicides among Nigerians. Olawepo said depression was an illness characterised by at least two weeks of undue sadness, loss of interest in activities and lack of energy.
He said about 50 percent of major depression cases still go untreated adding that was responsible for the high rate of suicides in the country.
To prevent depression, the NMA advised Nigerians to eat at regular intervals, do regular exercises, avoid taking liquor and use drugs prescribed by health professionals.
