The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) at the national level has constituted a three-man committee with mandate to conduct a fresh election for executives that will steer the affairs of the NMA in the Lagos State Council.
This is the resolution of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NMA on the Lagos NMA election debacle.
According to the resolution, the Caretaker Committee, to be chaired by the Vice President of the NMA, has one month to conduct the fresh election. Other members of the committee are Dr. Ugwu George from the NMA in Enugu and Dr. Abdulgafar Jimoh from the NMA in Sokoto State.
It will be recalled that the Lagos State Council of the NMA in July produced two parallel executive officers after its July elections, with both groups claiming the genuine leadership of the professional body registered for Nigerian doctors and physicians.
Reacting, the Chairman of one of the factions, Dr. Olubunmi Omojowolo of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), said he was still making consultation on the issue and would comment at the appropriate time while the Chairman of the second group, Dr. Olumuyiwa Odusote of the Medical Guild, while confirming the development, said he aligned himself with the position of the national body.
According to the resolution of the national body, neither of the elected officers/groups as presently constituted was recognised by the NEC of the NMA.
Meanwhile, the bank account of the Lagos NMA has been frozen.
