The Lagos Nigerian Medical Assosiation Chairman, Dr Muyiwa Odusote, has called on parents to keep immunising their children against childhood killer diseases.
He said this at the opening ceremony of the association’s Physicians’ Week in Lagos.
Odusote , who decried the poor immunisation rate in Nigeria, also linked recent outbreak of measles and meningitis in the country to poor vaccine uptake and coverage in some regions.
He said, “We are more concerned about our children’s health, because many have died of vaccine-preventable disease. If government can channel more fund to immunisation and vaccine availability, many will be saved.
“Parents must endeavour to take their children for immunisation to boost their systems against any kind of disease; media engagement must also be adequately pursued in order to create awareness on the need for this intervention and also dispel rumours aimed to discourage vaccination.”
Odusote also called on the Federal Government to improve the welfare package for doctors to encourage them to practise in the country.
According to him, many of his colleagues are leaving for juicy offers in foreign hospitals due to the poor remuneration package for doctors in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr Bayo Aderiye , however, encouraged doctors in the state to be more diligent in the discharge of their duties.
