Nursing Internship Set To Begin As The NMCN Writes To All Universities

The much awaited Internship for graduate nurses is set to begin January 2017 according to a circular issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. 
 
The circular obtained by a medicalworld nigeria correspondent dated January 9th, 2017 signed by A. G. Yusuf (Mrs.) for the Secretary General/ Registrar NMCN and addressed to The Vice Chancellors of all Universities in Nigeria with Approved Departments of Nursing read as follows:
 
COMMENCEMENT OF ONE YEAR INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME FOR GRADUATES OF THE BACHELOR OF NURSING SCIENCE (B.N.Sc.) IN NIGERIA 
 
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria is pleased to inform you that approval has been given by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation for the commencement of one year internship for the Graduates of the B.N.Sc programme in Nigeria. Approval has also been given for the incorporation of the Internship Scheme into the Scheme of Service of the Federation. 
 
The details on the above are contained in the Circular from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation to the Hon. Minister of Health, Ref. No. HCSF/EPO/EIR/CND/ 100/ST dated 7TH , September 2016. 
 
In view of the above, the Council has concluded arrangements for the commencement of the internship programme from January 2017. To facilitate the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the programme as well as assessment of the Interns, the Council has produced the following documents: 
 
1. Implementation Guide for Internship programme for Graduates of Bachelor of Nursing Science programme 
2. Logbook for the internship and 
3. The Checklist for the Supervision of the B.N.Sc. Nurse- Interns. 
 
These documents are available in the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as saleable items for the Department of Nursing to obtain in preparation for the mobilization of the next available set of eligible graduates for the internship. 
 
The Council expresses sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Management of the University for the support and cooperation as we work towards the promotion and maintenance of excellence in Nursing and Midwifery education and practice in Nigeria.
 
You would recall that the approval for nursing internship in nigeria came last year after years of struggles and a few in-house fighting.
