Doctors in state-owned general hospitals in Ogun have threatened to down tools in September, if the government fails to attend to what they called the pitiable state of infrastructure in the hospitals.
The doctors, under the aegis of National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners, Ogun State chapter, on Tuesday, gave this warning on Tuesday while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Medical Association House in Abeokuta.
While lamenting the infrastructure decay in the hospitals across the state, they claimed that many of the machines and equipment were grounded, adding that some of the buildings needed to be demolished and rebuilt.
The body who spoke through its state Chairman, Dr Oladunni Adetola, also complained of non-availability of ambulances and called on the state government to employ more health workers in order to reduce work load on staff for better performance. Adetola claimed that the last time the state government employed health workers was in 2013.
The association, however, threatened to down tools by September, should the state government fail to address the issues.
He said, “There is gross shortage of medical personnel such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and other allied health professionals, in the general hospitals across all the zones of the state.”
He said it was painful that state-owned hospitals lacked major medical equipment such as suctioning machine, oxygen concentrator and suturing instruments, needed for emergency services.
The doctors appealed to the government to pay their 16 months outstanding check-off dues deducted but not remitted into the association’s account.
