Indigenous medical professionals have said they were set to start production of local eye drops and other related equipment to reduce the cost of treatment.
Under the auspices of Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, they also expressed worry over the rate of blindness nationwide. Speaking ahead of its 41st yearly conference with the theme, 'Technology for Ophthalmic Care in the Developing World,' billed to hold in the Port Harcourt next week, the chairperson of the organising committee, Dr. Adedayo Adio, said the cost of importing eye drops and machines in Nigeria was expensive. They noted that if such products and facilities were manufactured locally, there would be reduction in the cost of eye treatment and improve the economy as well.
Adio stated that the number of blindness and cataract cases in the nation were pathetic, noting that cataract was treatable. She maintained that investment in eye care treatment would help in reducing the number of blind cases drastically. According to her: "When the body starts such production, it would repatriate profit and create more job opportunities for the teaming population and also improve eye care delivery.
Many other residents, who spoke at the meeting, urged officers in charge of the permit to be friendly and pro-vide accurate information. General Manager of Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, Remi Oni-Omisan, assured the residents that the process for approval of building per-mit would be easier as it would be processed within 30 working days.
Commissioner for Physical. Planning and Urban Devel-opment, Anifowose Wasiu Abiola, however, enjoined all developers, builders and individuals to henceforth comply with the directive without any further delay.
He warned of the consequence of building without permit, which he said, could attract sealing or total dem-olition of such property.
