PCN Closes Down 280 Illegal Patent Stores In Zamfara

In its bid to sanitise drug management and administration to the public, the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed off 280 illegal drug premises in Zamfara State.

The enforcement team, headed by Council’s Director, Inspection and Monitoring, Mrs Anthonia Aruya, made the disclosure in Gusau while addressing journalists on the weeklong activities of the council in the state.

Accoding to her, the enforcement exercise in the state was part of efforts by PCN to reverse the ugly trend of abusing drugs and improve on the quality of pharmaceutical services delivery to the good people of the state.

Aruya added that the sealing of the illegal premises, was in compliance with the marching order given by the National Assembly to close down illegal medicine premises in the country and also the directive by the minister of health to ensure that all premises where medicines are stored or sold are registered with PCN.

She added, some of these premises stored products in environments where the quality, safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products cannot be guaranteed thus exposing the public to serious danger.

“At the end of the enforcement exercise, a total of 365 premises were visited out of which a total of 280 premises made up of four illegal pharmacies and 361 Patent Medicine stores, were sealed for various offences, some of which include operating without registration with PCN, failure to renew premises’ license, dispensing ethical products without the supervision of a pharmacist, poor sanitary conditions among others”, she said.

Aruya said the PCN sealed the affected premises, as the council cannot guarantee that drugs sold in the illegal premises are of same integrity as specified by the manufacturers.
