A Federal High Court In Lagos, has sentenced two pharmacists, Geoffrey Ezeokwu and his assistant Moses Ajibo to three years imprisonment for for unlawful diversion of ephedrine, a precursor chemical for the production of methamphetamine.
Justice Salisu Saidu passed down the judgement on the duo after founding them guilty of being in possession of 300 kilograms of Ephedrine that was discovered to be missing.
Earlier, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, had arraigned the convicts on charges bordering on unlawful diversion of ephedrine, a precursor chemical for the production of methamphetamine.
The NDLEA Prosecution team led by Sunday Mbona Joseph alleged that the defendants were arrested in June 2012 where 300 kilograms of Ephedrine was recovered while 200 kilograms of the precursor chemical was discovered to be missing.
According to the Agency: “The consignment was meant for Marleyshree Pharmaceuticals Ltd in Sabongari, Kano but was kept in their warehouses in Lagos.
During the trial, the Agency called a total of ten witnesses and tendered several exhibits while the Defense called four witnesses including the Defendants who testified on their own behalf.
However, after the final written addresses, the trial judge found the defendants guilty of the offence and convicted them.
While delivering the judgement, Justice Saidu sentenced the
Pharmacist Geoffrey Ezeukwu, who was convicted for diversion of the recovered 300 kilograms to three years imprisonment while his Assistant Moses Ajibo was convicted for the missing 200 kilograms on the count two of the charge.
