Determined to find lasting solutions to local production of essential medicines, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, has called on the Federal Government to extend joint ventures in the manufacture of essential medicines especially antimalaria and anti-infectives, to other pharmaceutical companies.
The call came after the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole shortly after the FEC meeting on Wednesday, May 31, said the Federal Executive Council had approved a joint venture agreement between the Federal Government and May & Baker PLC to produce Yellow Fever vaccines in Nigeria from 2017 to 2021.
The joint venture agreement as declared by the minister would involve counterparts funding in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model between the Federal Government and May & Baker PLC. In a statement by the PSN, President of the PSN, Dr. Ahmed Yakasai and General Secretary of the Association, Gbolagade Iyiola said the planned venture would provide solutions to the nation’s over dependency on importation of medicines.
According to the duo, the joint venture agreement between the Federal Government and May & Baker PLC would go a long way to guarantee availability of vaccines for routine immunissations during national emergencies as observed recently during outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis, CSM.
They reasoned that further robust collaborative efforts of this nature will go a long way in “boosting availability, affordability of safe and efficacious medicines and vaccines for all Nigerians.”
They noted that May & Baker PLC, as one of the few Nigerian Pharmaceutiical companies with World Health Organisation, WHO, pre-qualification in Good Manufacturing Practice, GMP, certification will surely be able to enhance its capacity utilisation and explore opportunities in exportation of vaccines to global markets.
